11 Septembre, 1973, Santiago du Chili : un coup d’État militaire contre le gouvernement républicain élu est conduit par Augusto Pinochet. Ce jour-là, la longue tradition démocratique installée durablement depuis 1917 est brutalement interrompue par l’assassinat de Salvador Allende. Un documentaire politique, emblématique de cette période, a été réalisé par Patricio Guzmán. Il s’agit d’un film en trois parties dont la deuxième a été tournée pendant les mois qui précèdent le coup d’État à Santiago. La vidéo de Melik Ohanian a été tournée aux endroits exacts où se sont déroulés les événements de 1973, enregistrant les réalités contemporaines de Santiago aujourd’hui. Le commentaire du film original de 1973, utilisé comme narration de référence historique, est confronté au film tourné en 2007.
11 September 1973, Santiago, Chile: Augusto Pinochet leads a coup d’état against the elected republican government. On this day, the long democratic tradition that had existed since 1917 is brutally brought to a halt with the assassination of Salvador Allende. A political documentary symbolic of this period was made by Patricio Guzmán. The second part of Guzmán’s three-part film was made in the months leading up to the coup d’état in Santiago. Melik Ohanian made a film that records contemporary reality in Santiago today in the same places where the events occurred in 1973. The film commentary of the original 1973 documentary is used as a narrative/historical reference juxtaposed onto the film from 2007.

Invisible Film est la projection en 35 mm d’une copie originale du film Punishment Park de Peter Watkins sur le lieu même où a été tourné le film en 1971. La projection est faite en temps réel au crépuscule, sans écran, dans le désert de El Mirage en Californie. Punishment Park est un film politique qui a été censuré durant 25 ans aux États-Unis. Invisible Film interroge de manière troublante la question du genre documentaire et de la fiction.
Invisible Film a 35 mm original copy of the film Punishment Park by Peter Watkins is projected in the exact same location where the film was shot in 1971. The film is projected in real time at dusk, without a screen, in the El Mirage desert in California. Punishment Park is a political film that was censored for 25 years in the United States. It examines issues about the documentary genre and fiction in a disquieting manner.

Les films S16mn couleur et sonores ont été réalisés dans un stade d’athlétisme couvert, ancienne usine réhabilitée en terrain de sport dans la banlieu de Lyon en 1998. Avant la course, le support filmique a été coupé à la longueur équivalente à la meilleur perfomance de chacun des coureurs sur 800 m et 1500 m. Le coureur se devait de battre son propre record pour qu’il existe l’image enregistrée de sa propre performance.
These S16mm films in color with sound were made in a covered athletics stadium that was formerly a factory (rehabilitated as a sports field) in the suburbs of Lyon in 1998. The characters are three young athletes, one of whom is a French junior champion in the 800-meter race. Before the race the film stock was cropped to the length of the duration of the runner’s best personal records in the 800 and 1500 meters. The runner had to beat his own record in order for his performance to be filmed until the finish line.
